How to Choose Complimentary Furniture

Every element in a room interacts with every other element to create the collective feel or look of the space. Whether this collective style is cohesive or not depends on how the different elements are put together.

Furniture is an important element that needs to be chosen with care. Does it match with the colour of the walls? Does it match with the carpet, and if you already have the furniture but are planning on adding other elements to the room, then do they match with the furniture?

For example, if you're planning to install shutters en blinds in your home, always make sure that they don't clash with the rest of the elements in the room such as the furniture. This is not to say that everything needs to be a similar colour or style, but to say that everything needs to make sense when put together.

It is important to say here that style and taste are very personal things, and what may look pleasing to one person may seem hideous to another. However, there are ground rules when it comes to design, and generally it is wise to stay within these rules.

Creating a space where all the elements come together in harmony is the key to decorating successfully. If at all there should be disharmony or a clash in styles and colours, make sure that it is intentional and not an accident!
